  1. OMG we ALL went to the same doctor!I was told that I had a fatty liver too, about 30 years ago. The just lose weight was per usual, but not tied into the fatty liver. Nothing was said about things to do for it. Maybe they didn’t have the resources of information available now to discuss ways to reduce the problem. I’m still only a month in with the CT, Ultrasounds and MRI. Haven’t had any CT biopsy yet, just got the referral letter today. Not available at my hospital, so I have to go off-island to get it done. As usual in small town areas, the doctors are disappearing and the Nurse Practitioners are left to take the role. I just thought that I had gas making my stomach hurt. Then they started sending me for another diagnostic procedure every Friday for the past month. Then, I start seeing the words: suspicious, lesions, mass, carcinoma, malignancy… Happy Halloween! Scary stuff!

    1. Try not to be scared. The imaging will confirm what you are dealing with. If you are still in the moderate stages of fatty liver disease, which is now called steatotic liver disease, there is a medication called Rezdiffra that you should ask your doctor about. It is not uncommon for people to feel like they aren't given direction about what to do.

I had liver cancer also and received radiation which shrunk my tumors. It was not a difficult process (the radiation). What is difficult is having a transplant which I had also. So, let's try to avoid that. 30 years ago, even 6 years ago when I was diagnosed, doctors were mostly uninformed about liver disease. That is changing quickly. And what they told me was to lose at least 10% of my body weight, exercise, and reduce my consumption of "added sugar" in my diet to as close to zero as I could get it. Also, they made medication adjustments to ensure that my blood sugar, cholesterol and lipid levels were normal. If you need help understanding how to do all this let us know. I hope that you have been able to connect with a treatment team that is helpful to you. -Sue (team member)

  2. I was told 11 years ago that I had a fatty liver. Never did anything about it because there wasn't a concern. December 2023 I decided to get things looked at because I was going to retire and not planning on insurance for a couple years before I hit Medicare eligibility. My doctor said I had to have my gallbladder removed. He wouldn't let me put it off. So that was done and he took a biopsy of my liver, by chance I guess because he didn't tell me he was going to do that. Came back as moderate scarring and Fibrosis and gave me a doom and gloom speech. He said it was beyond his expertise. My primary doctor said it wasn't good either and she is more treating the base cause and not meds. She ran labs and my liver enzymes continually keep rising and I now have really bad diabetes. Just 6 months prior my blood sugar was normal. My rheumatologist referred me to a specialist but I had to cancel due to no insurance. Anyone else having problems with liver enzymes continuing to rise? What are you doing to lower that?
