Mike's Journey

My husband Mike was diagnosed with NASH on November 16th, 2018. The disease has advanced to stage 4. He is being referred to University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha almost 4 hours away. We have no idea what to expect or what our options even are.

  1. Hello, thank you for reaching out. I understand (from experience of) going from stage 1 to stage 4 is so terrifying.
It sounds like going to a larger facility would be a great option for your husband. I know it again is making things more nervous and scarier.
For myself being referred to University of Colorado hospital was the best thing to happen to me. There I received more knowledgeable care and was with hepatologist that could guide my care from this point on. I do not know your physician's history and going on my personal journey (I am no doctor)
It might be that they feel he would get the more updated care there.
Have a list of questions and concerns with you on your first visit with new facility. Make sure you are there too, to write down what is being said and directed. (Some patients attention span is foggy because of the liver not filtering out toxins.) (I had my daughter with me at every appt. She asked the questions and wrote down doctors' suggestions and orders.)
I personally have been living with Stage 4 now for 14 years. I manage my liver health with my diet and make sure to do regular imaging that is ordered every 6 mos.
Your husband is very lucky to have you along with him on this journey.
My best advice is be prepared for this new visit and make sure you do not leave appointment without all your questions and concerns answered.
    All my best.
