Preparing for a Liver Biopsy
A liver biopsy is a procedure in which a doctor takes a small sample of liver tissue for examination. A liver biopsy can help diagnose liver conditions such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatitis, or other liver diseases.1
Preparing for a liver biopsy can be a bit daunting. But with the right steps, you can ensure that the process goes smoothly.
Talk with your doctor
The first step in preparing for a liver biopsy is to have a detailed conversation with your doctor. Ask them what to expect from the procedure and how you can best prepare.1,2
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines, like NSAIDs and blood thinners, can affect blood clotting. Your doctor needs to know whether you are taking them before the procedure.1,2
You also want to tell your doctor about any allergies you have. The same goes for any known medical conditions or symptoms you currently have.1
Expect blood and imaging tests
Your doctor might order blood or imaging tests before your liver biopsy. These tests help ensure that the procedure is safe for you. Here is why they are used:1,2
- Blood tests – These tests check how well your blood clots and whether there are any other blood-related issues. Good clotting is crucial to prevent excessive bleeding during the biopsy.
- Imaging tests – Imaging tests like ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scans might be needed to help your doctor guide the biopsy needle to the right spot in your liver. These tests provide a detailed view of your liver’s structure and help avoid complications.
Follow fasting instructions
Your doctor will give you specific instructions about eating and drinking before the biopsy. You will likely need to fast for several hours before the procedure. This usually means no food or drink, except for small sips of water if needed.1,2
Your doctor also might ask you to stop taking certain medicines temporarily before the biopsy. This helps minimize the risk of bleeding and other complications. Follow these instructions carefully.1,2
Plan for someone to drive you home
A liver biopsy is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. But because you might be given a sedative or anesthesia, you will not be able to drive yourself home.1,2
Arrange for a friend, family member, or a trusted person to drive you home after the procedure. This ensures your safety and allows you to rest comfortably after the biopsy.
It is also a good idea to have someone stay with you for a few hours after you get home. While complications are rare, having someone around can provide peace of mind in case you need help.2
Follow post-procedure instructions
After the biopsy, you should take plenty of time to rest. Do not do any rigorous activity or lift anything heavy for about 1 week after the procedure. You may have some mild pain where the biopsy was done, but it should be temporary.2
Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for the biopsy site, manage any discomfort, and monitor for signs of complications. Follow these instructions closely. If you stopped taking certain medicines before the procedure, ask your doctor when it is safe to take them again. Contact your doctor if you have any concerns.1,2
